When my second son Reece was born, three and a half years after his brother Sean, our life changed. Reece had eczema from his very first day in the world. It started as rough cheeks, progressed to a red raw bleeding infected face until finally at five months old his whole body was ravaged by this itchy disease.
Every day became consumed by applying moisturizers. I spent hours holding this wriggly irritated child to stop the damage caused by intense and continuous scratching. Reece was on antibiotics for his constant infections and he had phenergan around the clock in attempt to lessen the itching, it also succeeded in making him sleepy which was a blessing during those long days and nights.
I knew there wasn't much to take the itchiness away but I wanted to find something that I could put him in that would prevent him from scratching. Some sort of clothing or protective wrap. I talked to plunket, rang hospitals, doctors and allergy specialists. No one had heard of anything like this so I went ahead and made my first wrap-around. It was easy to put on and it worked, finally I could wrap him up and put him in bed knowing he was safe from scratching. He seemed to be more relaxed too because he knew he could not get his hands out to scratch. I could also put him in his car seat and drive with both hands on the wheel instead of one arm holding his hands down.
But I needed more.
Babies and children who experience sensitive skin or eczema need special clothes. Firstly they need 100% cotton clothing, anything else can cause irritation and skin flare-ups. As Reece got older I needed a sleepsuit that covered his hands and feet. Also in summer he still had to wear long pants and tops to cover his skin, any exposed skin got scratched. Through talking to other mums I realised I was not alone, there were other families out there who needed these specialist products. Kumfy Cotton was created out of a genuine desire to help other mums and children like Reece.
I hope our products can bring you and your family some relief.
Kindest regards
